A dark, whispery Billie Eilish returns on “NDA”, the fifth single from her album Happier Than Ever that is due at the end of this month. “NDA” drives forward with punchy bass, propulsive synths and auto-tuned cries as Eilish reveals the dangerous reality of her fame: “Got a stalker walkin’ up and down the street”. With a matter-of-fact delivery and stark lyrics, it sounds all the more sinister. But that’s nothing new from Eilish whose polished, horror-themed debut album catapulted her to the height of her fame. Now, she ponders questionable romances, longs for the future and wishes to disappear; “Had a pretty boy over but he couldn’t stay / On his way out I made him sign an NDA”, she sings, and later, “Think I took it too far / When I sold you my heart”. Meanwhile, in the self-directed music video, Eilish dodges stunt cars, lurks in the dark, and falls to her knees as she mourns her privacy.
